Leave it to java

After what felt like thousands of years of font purgatory, fonts have more or less been completely ironed out in modern Linux desktop systems.

But that’s not going to stop Java from mucking things up. Start with the fact that it’s apparently unable to recognize OTF fonts, only TTF. Once you get over that hump (and discover that it also inexplicably fails to list Inconsolata as a monospace font) and you get this horror:

Java completely botching sub-pixel font rendering
LOOK MA I CAN DO SOB-PAKSUL FONT RANDURING HERP DERP DERP

Beautiful, Swing. Simply beautiful.
