On the subject of marmalade, there’s now emacs-starter-kit v2 ( https://github.com/technomancy/emacs-starter-kit ) which uses marmalade and requires emacs 24
I took that project and customized it for my own ~/.emacs.d listed here: https://github.com/rawsyntax/emacs.d . I’ve written a routine in ~/.emacs.d/init.el that checks a list of packages to see if they’re installed, and installs if not.
