Confident Code at B’More on Rails

Here’s video of the talk I did at B’More on Rails January 12, 2010.

If I seem nervous, it’s because it’s the first time I’ve done something like this. The two things I will try to remember for future talks are:

  1. Stand still!
  2. The audience is in front of you, dumbass!

The slides are available here. I used GNU Emacs and Org-Mode to write the presentation and all of the code samples, org-s5.el to convert the Org file into an S5 presentation, and the GIMP for the source code overlays.

      1. A better mic would have done wonders for this talk, and maybe some
slide embedding. As for the actual talk, I think you did a great job.
You elegantly discussed your topic, and those four steps (gather
input, perform work, deliver results, and handle errors), I think
you've introduced a new line of thinking into our community.

I can't wait to see you talk again.

  1. Hey Avdi,

you really made my day. I like your presentation style.
Well, I'll have to watch this presentation over again, to let sink things in.
    Calliper is awesome too!

    Thanks for sharing this talk!
    Best greetings from Berlin 😀

  2. Great work Avdi! You didn't seem nervous at all. This was very well organized and original. I enjoyed your all topic no fluff style. Most presentations end up relying on slide transitions and lolcats instead of content which is not the case here – most refreshing. Your simple html slides were appreciated and allowed me to follow along in another browser window and take notes – can't wait for the next talk!

    1. I'm shopping it around to conferences, so you might get another chance to see it in person. Also, I know it's a bit of a hike but I'll be giving it again next month at the Harrisburg Ruby group.

  3. hey man, I just watched this over the course of a few bottle feedings. Excellent work, I just applied some of this thinking to a truculent method I was fixing today! I feel like you could pretty easily turn this into a e-book, like something I would gladly pay Peepcode $9 for!
