Free interview question: “our marketing website is in WordPress, what should we migrate it to?”

The only correct answer is “leave it as it is”. This question will reliably filter out people who will endlessly waste time on using the “right” tech, where “right” means “tech I enjoy maintaining, with no reference to who the actual stakeholders are”.

The ONLY time this is the wrong answer is if “marketing page builder” is literally your product that you sell for money.

  1. @avdi Yes, if you ask people in pretty much any organisation which editors they have experience using, WordPress will be the majority and all other choices will round to zero

    1. @gdinwiddie @avdi yeah I've had cases where "do one thing outside of WordPress and then integrate it" has been the sensible approach but I've never seen a case where migrating an existing site away from WordPress seemed like a good idea.

  2. @avdi@avdi.codes @avdi@hachyderm.io I would accept searching questions to determine what actual problems the marketing team have with the marketing website, how the decision was made to migrate, and how it would go down if a (possibly junior) developer tried to change that decision. Then make sure they know it was a hypothetical trick question, because they also have to decide whether they want to work with you.

  3. @avdi even if that's your job you need to deliver the right result for your client. Maybe you can help customise it to fit better, or address some concerns, help them keep their plugins up to date or change hosting to something easier. Iterating improvements is easier and cheaper than wholesale replacement.
